Johanna Engelina Crowdfunding

€ 50,- of meer,-

Managing a large ship like the Johanna Engelina is a labour-intensive and financially costly business. Especially if you want to honor the cultural historical character. We also want to leave the lowest possible footprint. After all, we live with nature with the ship and enjoy it every day. So nature is actually our bread lord. That is why we are very fond of the environment.

Economically, this is a difficult task. If we raise prices too much, the youth will no longer come, and we want to introduce them to all the beauty that nature can offer us. But you can
help us!

If you also don’t want the Johanna Engelina to become a sinking ship, support us financially by participating in our programme Partner of the Johanna Engelina or Friends of the Johanna Engelina. This contributes to the preservation of this cultural maritime heritage. Donate via the Foundation for the Preservation of Cultural Maritime Heritage. They ensure that the payment is processed correctly and reaches the right place!

Description

Johanna Engelina at Haringvliet 1907The Johanna Engelina is a Zeeland Tweemastklipper. This old lady was built in Middelburg in 1897 as “Daniel Jacoba” and then under various names has been in operation full-time for more than 120 years. Until the late 1930s she sailed as a sailing cargo ship to Germany, Belgium, the Baltic Sea and France. She survived two world wars, even though the enemy hunted such ships. Despite her age, she’s moved with her time. Since 1988 it offers an environmentally responsible sailing holiday accommodation for 33 people equipped with the most modern techniques. A unique way of sustainable travel with a cultural historical character. Up to and including the soot, the ship is 90% riveted and, apart from the raised hatch cover and the cockpit, is in its original condition

Owner/skipper Laurens Oranje tells

“22 years ago I bought the ship as the5th owner. All this time every euro earned has been reinvested and, of course, I have lived on it myself. It wasn’t a fat pot, but it was a beautiful way of life. During that period I built a club of about 80 enthusiastic Johanna Engelina sailors. This close-knit group experiences memorable sailing races a few times a year. For me, the Beurtveer and the Waddenrace remain unique occasions where we sail the ship in the ports in a traditional way. In addition, in those 22 years I have also built up a loyal circle of bookers who come to sail the ship every year with school, company, family or circle of friends for a weekend or week.

Sailing with the Johanna Engelina means unwinding. But also with a group of people, the youth in particular, sail the ship together. Days when social media comes second, in which we raise awareness of nature and the environment and learn and honor old maritime crafts. After each sailing trip, I can still marvel at the fact that you can sail a ship of almost 40 meters with only the wind from A to B. My life goal is to share these experiences with as many people as possible.
None of this should be lost.”

The Corona Crisis

The Dana Adriana deep loaded, tacking on (probably) the Haringvliet. For safe sailing, the ship must meet many inspections and requirements. We normally pay for the strict environmental requirements, mast inspection, rigging and safety inspections from turnover. In addition, there are of course fixed costs such as insurance and port fees and the ship requires a lot of maintenance every year to stay in condition. Last year, the kitchen was replaced and a new eco-friendly engine was installed. This year, a number of sails, the batteries and the anchor winch are in need of replacement.

However, due to the Corona measures, we have hardly been allowed to sail since March 2020. This means that we have hardly been able to generate revenue and it is still very uncertain what next season will look like. That is why we are looking for help to bridge this difficult period in the 125th anniversary of this beautiful ship. As you will understand, the need is high. If you also do not want the Johanna Engelina to become a sinking ship, please support us by participating in our partner program or become a friend of the Johanna Engelina. This contributes to the preservation of this cultural maritime heritage.

Friends of the Johanna Engelina

In the winter of 2019/2020, we installed a new low-emission engine so that we can sail environmentally friendly even without sails. In addition, we have tackled the central heating and the electricity network. This has resulted in a 35% energy saving! Last year we also installed a new kitchen. In addition to these improvements, there is standard maintenance every winter, such as painting and keeping the woodwork tidy. To make maintenance and especially the improvements possible, we are looking for Friends and Sponsors. By making an annual financial contribution of at least €50, a Friend helps make recurring maintenance, and especially investment in, for example, a new mainsail or anchor winch, possible.

All Friends of the Johanna Engelina are welcome during the competitions

to come and have a beer in the pre-season(Pieperrace),late season (Klipperrace, Brandarisrace, Beurtveer or Muiderhardzeildagen. In addition, a friends day is organized in June/July. Experience for yourself how the Johanna Engelina sails and enjoy an extensive meal with the entire team of friends. But you can also participate in the annual rigging day and beating day in spring and autumn with lunch and afterwards snacks, snert and beer. In addition, Friends are kept informed of the sailing and job experiences of the Johanna Engelina via, among other things, the newsletter.
