Klipperrace 2026 — Sail Along in Enkhuizen on the IJsselmeer

The Enkhuizer Klipperrace is the largest and most prestigious sailing race for traditional clippers on the IJsselmeer — the Dutch national championship (racing) for clippers. The race has been held since 1975; in 2025 the event celebrated its fiftieth edition. Every year more than 40 historic sailing ships gather in the harbour of Enkhuizen for a weekend full of thrilling races, good company and maritime tradition. The Klipperrace consists of two parts: the Drie Steden Race on Saturday and the Olympic course on Sunday. The Drie Steden Race begins with the imposing anchor start in the Krabbersgat near Enkhuizen — a spectacular sight as dozens of clippers weigh anchor and hoist their sails all at once. After that it is a matter of choosing the right route: the race committee designates three buoys off Medemblik, Stavoren and Urk, two of which must be rounded. On Sunday the Olympic course is sailed. The two classes start one after the other and the courses partly overlap, keeping the fleet close together throughout the race. The Klipperrace guarantees sailing spectacle with fiercely competitive crews — for clipper skippers this is, after all, the race of the year. Aboard the clipper Johanna Engelina you sail as an active crew member. Together with skipper Laurens and the regular crew you help hoist the sails, trim the sheets and take the helm. Sailing experience is not required — everyone is welcome on board. The Johanna Engelina performs superbly in the Klipperrace: 2nd place in 2024, 5th in 2022. On Saturday evening, during the big party in Enkhuizen — with live music and all crews ashore — the Zilveren Klipper and the Zilveren Schaal are awarded. All meals, coffee, tea, soft drinks, beer and wine are included. A major advantage of the Johanna Engelina: you simply stay aboard, in one of the ten authentic ship's cabins. On many other participating ships staying overnight is not possible and you have to arrange your own bed in Enkhuizen — here you just climb into your bunk after the party.
