The Horizontoer is an annual cultural sailing event on the Wadden Sea. Over five days we sail aboard the historic clipper Johanna Engelina along the Wadden Islands, where theatre performances and music concerts are staged at remarkable locations. The Horizontoer combines the best of both worlds: sailing across the Wadden Sea by day with wind in the sails and views over the mudflats, and enjoying theatre, music and dance on the Wadden Islands in the evening. Terschelling, Vlieland and other islands form the backdrop for performances at unique locations — from beach pavilions to dune valleys. During the Horizontoer, skipper Laurens and his crew sail you from island to island. You can join in the sailing or simply relax on the deck of the Johanna Engelina. Our experienced cook prepares every meal on board: breakfast, lunch and dinner. You sleep in your own cabin with duvet and towels — fully catered for. Every year the Horizontoer draws culture lovers who like to combine sailing with theatre and music. The festival is known for its intimate atmosphere: small groups, special locations and the relaxed transition from a day on the water to an evening full of culture. The Horizontoer aboard the Johanna Engelina is ideal for couples, groups of friends and solo travellers looking for a unique combination of sailing and culture on the Wadden Sea. Frequently asked questions

Can the events be booked individually?

Yes, every event and trip on this page can be booked per person on fixed dates. You share the ship with other guests — and that is exactly what makes the atmosphere on board so special.

What does running aground on the Wadden Sea mean?

Running aground means the ship settles onto a sandbank in the middle of the Wadden Sea at low tide. You can then literally walk across the seabed, go beachcombing for tidal treasures and spot seals — a unique experience on the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea.

Is a sailing event suitable for children?

Many events are aimed specifically at families, such as the Waddenzwerftocht (pirate week) and the Paaszeiltocht. Special rates often apply for children. No sailing experience is required and the crew takes care of safety on board.
