Into The Great Wide Open is the festival on Vlieland that brings together music, film, theatre and sustainability — and the Johanna Engelina is your floating hotel in the harbour. No tent, no mud, but your own cabin with hot and cold running water aboard a historic clipper. Every year Into The Great Wide Open draws thousands of visitors to Vlieland. The island is transformed into one big festival site with concerts and performances at the most extraordinary spots: from beach bar to dune hollow. But where do you sleep? Aboard the Johanna Engelina, of course. On Friday we sail from Harlingen to Vlieland. The crossing of the Wadden Sea is an adventure in itself: skipper Laurens and his crew hoist the sails while you enjoy the views over the mudflats. Once we reach Vlieland, the Johanna Engelina stays in the harbour for the entire festival weekend — your home base for Into The Great Wide Open. Every morning breakfast is ready on board. You can spend all day at the festival and return to your own cabin on the Johanna Engelina in the evening. Warm and dry, with duvet and towels — the ultimate comfort for festival-goers who love sailing and culture. Into The Great Wide Open aboard the Johanna Engelina is ideal for couples, groups of friends and festival lovers who want to combine Vlieland, sailing and festival. Not an ordinary camping weekend, but an unforgettable experience. Book your cabin for Into The Great Wide Open 2026!

Frequently asked questions
Can the events be booked individually?
Yes, every event and trip on this page can be booked per person on fixed dates. You share the ship with other guests — and that is exactly what makes the atmosphere on board so special.
What does running aground on the Wadden Sea mean?
Running aground means the ship settles onto a sandbank in the middle of the Wadden Sea at low tide. You can then literally walk across the seabed, go beachcombing for tidal treasures and spot seals — a unique experience on the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea.
Is a sailing event suitable for children?
Many events are aimed specifically at families, such as the Waddenzwerftocht (pirate week) and the Paaszeiltocht. Special rates often apply for children. No sailing experience is required and the crew takes care of safety on board.
