Midweek sailing on the clipper Johanna Engelina offers the best of the Dutch waterland: five days across the IJsselmeer, the Wadden Sea and along the Frisian coast. An active week with all the room you need to unwind — the perfect balance between adventure and enjoyment. On Sunday you board in Harlingen and get to know skipper Laurens, the ship, the crew and your fellow travellers. After a welcome drink and safety instructions you spend the first night in your own cabin. Monday your roaming trip begins. The sails are hoisted and the ship sets course for the Frisian coast. Sail along actively or relax on deck — the choice is yours. Tuesday you sail towards the Afsluitdijk. After locking through at Kornwerderzand, the salty Wadden region lies ahead — the largest continuous nature area in Europe. This is where the real Wadden Sea adventure begins. Wednesday you set course for Terschelling, a welcoming island with a magnificent area of woods and dunes. Along the way you sail past exposed sand flats where seals regularly bask in the sun. On Terschelling you can explore the island, rent bikes or visit the beach. Thursday you sail to Medemblik, a charming medieval town on the IJsselmeer, or to another destination depending on wind and wishes. Every day brings new harbours and vistas. Friday it is all hands on deck one last time before the ship moors back in Harlingen at 16:00. Our experienced cook prepares all meals fresh aboard every day: breakfast, lunch and dinner. Coffee, tea, buttermilk, soft drinks, beer and wine are included all week. This sample programme depends on the weather conditions and your wishes. Skipper Laurens puts together a unique route for every midweek trip.

    Frequently asked questions

How many people can join on the Johanna Engelina?

On a day trip there is room for up to 53 people. On multi-day sailing trips with overnight stays the ship accommodates up to 33 people (31 with catering aboard), spread over 10 cabins with hot and cold running water.

Which harbours does the Johanna Engelina sail from?

In the summer season (May–October) Harlingen (Nieuwe Willemskade) is the home port; in winter (November–April) it is the NDSM wharf in Amsterdam. On request, Enkhuizen, Hoorn, Muiden and other harbours are also possible.

Do I need to know how to sail to come along?

No. Everyone can pitch in with hoisting the sails and taking the helm, but simply relaxing on deck is just as welcome. Skipper Laurens — who has sailed the Johanna Engelina since 1999 — and his crew handle all the sailing tasks.

How is the route of the sailing trip decided?

The route is put together with skipper Laurens based on the weather, the wind and your wishes. Options include the IJsselmeer and Markermeer with historic harbour towns such as Volendam, Hoorn and Medemblik, or the Wadden Sea with Terschelling, Vlieland and running aground on a sandbank.
