Specially for schools, we have developed options for a study week or a day cruise on and around the water. Educational and active. The idea behind such a school outing is to link a sailing week or a day to a range of school subjects. On top of that, there is room for sport and relaxation. As a school you can also book several ships for your classes or groups. You put together the programme yourself and, together with the pupils, take care of the meals aboard. Sample programme — A day of sailing with secondary-school pupils: An overnight stay aboard with a day of sailing on a 40-metre clipper from Amsterdam. The class comes aboard at 09:00. After a welcome talk with safety instructions, we discuss exactly what we are going to do during the day. We sail behind Amsterdam Central Station, straight through all the commuters crossing by ferry. Then on to the Oranjesluizen locks, with an explanation of the function and workings of the locks and the waterways. After passing the Schellingwouderbrug bridge, the sails can finally go up. We explain the interplay of winches, ropes and pulleys, and how two people can hoist a sail of 180 m². How the sails work is explained using Bernoulli's principle. We also spend time on the Pythagorean theorem and how we use it aboard. Meanwhile we sail past Durgerdam, IJburg, Vuurtoreneiland (lighthouse island), Uitdam, Pampus and Muiden — all places of great historical value.

Frequently asked questions
How many people can join on the Johanna Engelina?
On a day trip there is room for up to 53 people. On multi-day sailing trips with overnight stays the ship accommodates up to 33 people (31 with catering aboard), spread over 10 cabins with hot and cold running water.
Which harbours does the Johanna Engelina sail from?
In the summer season (May–October) Harlingen (Nieuwe Willemskade) is the home port; in winter (November–April) it is the NDSM wharf in Amsterdam. On request, Enkhuizen, Hoorn, Muiden and other harbours are also possible.
Do I need to know how to sail to come along?
No. Everyone can pitch in with hoisting the sails and taking the helm, but simply relaxing on deck is just as welcome. Skipper Laurens — who has sailed the Johanna Engelina since 1999 — and his crew handle all the sailing tasks.
How is the route of the sailing trip decided?
The route is put together with skipper Laurens based on the weather, the wind and your wishes. Options include the IJsselmeer and Markermeer with historic harbour towns such as Volendam, Hoorn and Medemblik, or the Wadden Sea with Terschelling, Vlieland and running aground on a sandbank.
